I love essential oils. If I was rich (or as business coaches say, When I am rich), I will have them all. At least the 80+ essential oils listed in Young Living and maybe 40 of their blends, just in case I am not sure of what to use.
At the moment I only have a basic collection of 10 that I plan to grow slowly but steadily while I become rich.
It is hard to explain the pleasure I feel when I open my drawer and I see these little bottles keeping inside the purest, most concentrated beautiful smells from nature. Flowers, herbs, fruits, incense…all in my drawer. I love infusing them so my home smells like a spa or Biome. I sometimes use them topically mixing them with coconut oil and rubbing them wherever I feel it could be appropriate. Geoff is not so keen on this and keeps complaining that I sometimes smell like a health shop. But I don’t care, I love it.
Last week I caught up with my lovely friend, Amanda, who is a writer and also works in the Essential Oils industry. We had a lovely lunch at Coco Bliss Café (a favourite of ours) and we spent literally 4 hours talking about essential oils, their properties, smelling them and doing experiments. I am so jealous of her collection! Amanda knows HEAPS because she has been using them for nearly a decade. She reckons they have been crucial in her recovery from years of massive stress and anxiety, which is hard to tell because she is so gorgeous and calm and peaceful.

The thing is that it is proven that different smells trigger different responses in the brain. So you can sort of help or condition your brain to feel a bit differently through essential oils, like with meditation.
I asked Amanda if she could tell the Crave for Crafts blog readers the best essential oils to boost creativity and motivation when we are feeling stuck. Or when we want to create a nice environment at home to do your crafts, write or be super productive at work
Lavender, Peppermint and Lemon Essential Oils
These three essential oils are probably the most versatile and go-to oils for everything. If you are interested in essential oils, these ones are the first ones to get.
Lavender calms the brain, reduces stress and anxiety and has a lot of properties to heal skin conditions (among many other properties).
Peppermint improves mental focus and performance, helps with digestive issues and migraines. A research suggested that athletes who smell or even ingest peppermint oil of high quality, outperform those who doesn’t. Interesting, hey?
Lemon Essential Oil is another must have oil. It is cleansing, purifying and mood lifting.
Now the fun part is when you combine them together.
Amanda asked me to try an experiment. She gave me a bottle of Lavender and a bottle of Peppermint essential oils. I closed one nostril with one hand, and sniffed both oils at the same time through the other. Then I closed the other nostril and sniffed again both oils at the same time. I did this a few times and then, with both nostrils I smelled both oils.
OMG! I felt so different, calmer probaby. Amanda explained that when these 2 oils are used together, the brain gets balanced and you feel calmer. Try this!
When used together with Peppermint Oil, the blend improves your concentration. You can try the same experiment as before or put a few drops in a diffuser and smell them while you are crafting or working.
Best essential oils blend for boosting creativity
Amanda also shared this essential oils blend for boosting creativity. You can diffuse it at home or mix in a separate bottle and smell it on the go.
- 3 drops of Frankincense EO
- 2 drops of Lemon EO
- 1 drop of Peppermint EO
- 1 drop of Rosemary EO
Rosemary Essential Oil improves memory and alertness dramatically, according to various studies
Frankincense works as a general tonic for the body. It helps the digestive, respiratory and nervous systems. Amanda says that when you are not sure what essential oil to use, use Frankincense as it is the most complete in properties.
Best essential oils blend for boosting motivation
Amanda suggested this recipe for those days when life seems dull and heavy. Or to use when you feel sluggish in the afternoon:
- 2 drops of black pepper EO
- 2 drops of lime EO
- 2 drops of orange EO
- 2 drops of frankincense EO
I am going to try this blend asap. Citrus essential oils are my favourite. They are mood lifting and they make me feel good and happy instantly. Black pepper essential oil is energizing and also works great for muscles relief. The blend seems perfect to me!
Finally, Amanda also suggested other blends that you can get from Young Living or make it yourself (although each blend contains a lot of different oils and therefore are more pricey):
It contains mainly Basil, Rosemary, and Peppermint (you see? always Peppermint!)
She rubs a drop in her ear lobs, where the acupuncture points are to get into focus mode.
Build your dream
This one is great for entrepreneurs or anyone undertaking big projects, buying a house, getting married…you know, building dreams. It contains heaps of essential oils, therefore it is pretty pricey.
